Watchman News Silicon Valley big shots back teen’s biometric-controlled gun idea

The Smart Tech Challenges Foundation, led by a group of Silicon Valley heavy-hitters who are handing out $1 million for their Smart Tech for Firearms Challenge, named its first grant recipient today: a Boulder teenager whose idea was driven in part by the 2012 movie theater mass shootings in nearby Aurora.


Kai Kloepfer is integrating a biometric sensor into a firearm so that it will require an authorized user’s fingerprint to discharge. He received a $50,000 grant for his project, already in the works.


“It’s going to be my generation – the ones who have grown up with digital technology and electronic integration – that will lead the way in the development and adoption of smart gun technology,” he said in a release from the foundation. “ I have real hope that we can apply biometric technology to firearms in order to reduce accidental deaths and injuries, and to prevent tragedies.”
