Watchman News Paraguay attends BRICS meeting; ‘won’t affect’ Taiwan ties

The attendance of President Horacio Cartes of Paraguay at a meeting last week in Brazil that brought together South American leaders and leaders of the BRICS nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa will not affect Paraguay’s diplomatic ties with Taiwan, the latter’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Tuesday.

“Paraguay informed us of the president’s attendance, before and after the meeting,” ministry spokeswoman Anna Kao told local reporters, when asked about the issue.

The Paraguayan government has also stressed that diplomatic ties with Taiwan will not be affected, she said, pointing out that Cartes did not have any bilateral talks with President Xi Jinping of China.

The July 16 dialogue between the BRICS leaders and leaders of South American countries was held in the Brazilian capital Brasilia, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.

Also at the meeting were President Cristina Fernandez of Argentina, President Evo Morales of Bolivia, President Juan Manuel Santos of Colombia, President Michelle Bachelet of Chile, President Rafael Correa of Ecuador, President Donald Ramotar of Guyana, President Ollanta Humala of Peru, President Jose Mujica of Uruguay and President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela, according to the statement.
