A lot can happen to a robot on a rambling odyssey across this big, beautiful country. Just ask hitchBOT, the talking, tweeting robot that’s hitchhiking from Halifax to Victoria this summer.
In just over two weeks, the bucket-bodied ’bot with gum boots and pool noodle limbs has made it into the heart of British Columbia, where it awaits a motorcycle ride to Vancouver. Along the way, it has been bestowed with the name “Iron Woman” at a powwow on Manitoulin Island, hung out with summer vacationers and rock ’n’rollers, danced to the Harlem Shake in a Saskatchewan field and crashed a wedding in the alpine splendour of the Rocky Mountains.
“It’s gone fantastic. Much better than we thought,” said Frauke Zeller, a Ryerson University communications professor who is among the researcher and students behind the hitchBOT “social robotics” experiment.
