GOP DROPS PLANNED VOTE ON ABORTION BILL

With thousands of anti-abortion protesters are in DC, and the new Congress was ready to push legislation through that would make them happy. But – it looks like that will not happen, for now.

Republican leaders were planning House passage of legislation criminalizing most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy today, that Obama say he would veto. But late Wednesday they abruptly postponed that confrontation indefinitely after concluding they were short of votes.

Euro falls on ECB's quantitative easing

The European Central Bank has announced a landmark 1.1 trillion euro injection into the Eurozone's weak economy.

The long expected move follows similar action by the US's Federal Reserve back in 2008 as well as the Bank of Japan who've undertaken big bond buying programs to stimulate spending.

Yemeni unrest blocks the Whitehouse from repatriating Gitmo detainees there

The Obama administration has reportedly ruled out sending Guantanamo Bay detainees to Yemen because of the volatile security situation there.

Obama had approved repatriating detainees to Yemen two years ago, but worries about Al-Qaeda's Yemeni branch squashed that plan.

The Islamic State has extended their reach into Yemen, where government troops are fighting rebels trying to take control of the capital Sana'a.

US, CUBA ADDRESS OBSTACLES TO RESUMING DIPLOMATIC TIES

Obama and Cuba are trying to normalized ties - as the highest-level U.S. Delegation, to the communist island, holds a second day of talks with Cuban officials – for the first time in 30 years.

They are working on lifting of restrictions on American diplomats in Cuba and assurances that Cubans will have full access to a future U.S. Embassy in Havana. The Americans say the resumption in full diplomatic relations depends on how quickly its requests are met. Cuba is demanding its removal from a U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism, which Washington says it is considering.

 

Increased violence in Ukraine as sides trade accusations

US Secretary of State of John Kerry has accused Russian backed militants in eastern Ukraine of a, "blatant land grab," amid reports they have been extending the area they control by attacking Ukrainian forces.

There are mounting calls for Russia to remove its troops and equipment from Ukraine as fighting there has flared in the past week.

UK will do "everything it can" to tackle Islamic State

David Cameron has told his Iraqi counterpart the UK will do "everything it can" to stop British nationals joining Islamic State to cause "mayhem"…

The UK Prime Minister has met with Haider al Abadi in London ahead of a major meeting of politicians to discuss the ongoing fight against Islamic State…

German Pegida leader steps down over Hitler photo

One of the leaders of the German right-wing group PEGIDA has stepped down after a leaked photo of him posing as Adolf Hitler emerged. 

 

The group has achieved increasingly popularity in recent weeks, but this may be a major a step backward.
