Blizzard-stricken East digs out

New Englanders are beaten with 2 – 3 feet of snow and hurricane-force winds are now digging out as New Yorkers and others, who missed its full fury, questioned whether forecasts were overblown.

The storm buried the Boston area that was whipped with 70 mph winds. Blasting a hole in a seawall in Marshfield, Massachusetts, and capsized a 110 foot Revolutionary War ship in Newport, Rhode Island, snapping its mast and puncturing its hull.

 

Terrorists say Tripoli Hotel Attack was in Retaliation

The Islamic State says a deadly attack on a luxury hotel in Tripoli was in retaliation for the death of an Al-Queda militant, captured in a raid by US special forces. Reports suggest 10 people were killed in the attack in the Libyan capital, including five guards, four Europeans and an American security contractor.

JORDAN READY TO SWAP CAPTIVES WITH ISIS

 

Jordan is willing to swap an Iraqi woman prisoner (involved in hotel bombings) for a Jordanian pilot captured in December by ISIS.

Jordan, like the United States, does not negotiating with terrorists. An exchange also would set a precedent for negotiating with Islamic State, who in the past have not publicly demanded prisoner releases.

 

GREEK MARKETS IN TURMOIL

Greece's new Prime Minister says there will be no debt default, amid turmoil on Greek financial markets. Alexis Tsipras has told his first cabinet meeting, that a renegotiation of Greece's international bailout is the government's priority.

 

But the European Union is warning Athens to stick to its commitments.

 

 

And Greek banking shares have been plummeting in Wednesday trading - while yields on Greek government debt have been soaring, a sign that investors see them as more risky.

Mr Tsipras' team has already announced it is putting major privatisation projects on hold. -

British Prime Minister David Cameron has joked in the House of Commons that his Greek counterpart needs to adopt Mr Cameron's economic slogan....

 

 

'500 EUROPEAN WOMEN' HAVE JOINED IS IN SYRIA AND IRAQ

Research shows about 500 women from western Europe have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue says air strikes in the region could create a generation of so-called 'black widows'.

 

It warns radicalised women aligned to the Islamic State could pose a threat to European countries on their return.

 

The ISD has put together the largest ever study of female jihadists.

 

Ross Frenett from the Institute for Strategic Dialogue says they are monitoring women online who express motivation to join IS and fight....

 

SENATE TO BEGIN HEARINGS FOR OBAMA ATTORNEY GENERAL NOMINEE

Loretta Lynch is promising a fresh relationship with law enforcement - and with Congress - as she appears before a Senate committee Wednesday in her bid to become the nation's first female attorney general.

In the first confirmation hearing under the Republican-led Senate, Lynch was scheduled to appear before the Senate Judiciary Committee as it opens two days of hearings on her nomination. She's widely expected to win confirmation but will face tough questions nevertheless.

 

APPLE POSTS BIGGEST QUARTERLY PROFIT EVER

Apple has posted the biggest quarterly profit by a public company in history.

The US technology firm made $18bn net profit in the first quarter of its financial year.

The number came off the back of record iPhone sales, and Apple's profit margin per phone jumped sharply.

Danny Cox of stockbroker Hargreaves Lansdown says Apple's quarterly profit is ahead of previous records by some distance....
